Part 2 -- Conclusion of Author Tea Chat Transcript
AuthorVLJennings - Hi Jodilee!
Louise Bohmer - I actually do this in my pro editing, too. I give any MS a day or two rest, before I re-check it with a fresh eye. It never hurts. *JODI!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D*
jodilee - holy heck, is it working? LOL
Louise Bohmer - It is, now! LOL :D
jodilee - Hi VL - Hey Louise!!
AuthorVLJennings - I think we kicked a few bugs out! Lololol
Louise Bohmer - *smooches and hugs!* This lady is actually one of our Lach / LBF junior eds, and a darn fine ed, at that! :D Yes, poor V had to chase out computer phookas! Hahaaa
jodilee - I couldn't get it to load last night - I thought it was the 17th yesterday..LOL
Louise Bohmer - I hear you, hon! haha Iwas a day behind, too! LOL
AuthorVLJennings - ROF trying not to laugh... Same thing happened to me yesterday...almost tried to take my daughter to the dentist a day early!
jodilee - lol! ;)
Louise Bohmer - hahahahahaaaaa! Don't you just hate that?! LOL I will think I am a day behind on this, or a day ahead on that, and Steve has to remind me what day of the week it is. LOL!
Louise Bohmer - Any other questions for any one? :)
Louise Bohmer - I mean from anyone. LOL
AuthorVLJennings - Question... Do editors have to have some sort of degree in order to become editors?
EllaRegina - not me. thank you for answering my earlier ones! :)
Louise Bohmer - Okay, well now, to get in with the big houses, most want you to have, (at least from what I've researched) **Welcome, EllaRegina!! :D Thanks for comiing!** ...
Louise Bohmer - a BA in English, with at least 3 - 5 years editing experience.
AuthorVLJennings - How do editors get their jobs if they are not working with a big press?
Louise Bohmer - I was a year from achieving my BA in English when I left school for health reasons. *Hey Bruce! :D* But, I had a excellent GPA, and I have some other training in business with Finicial Planning and LIfe INsurance. So, I had what I guess you would call acquired experience, for the smaller houses to look at me as a n ed, when I first began.............
brucebarber - hiya 'weezie ;o}
Louise Bohmer - Now, I am seeking my professional editors certificate through the EAC -- Editors Assoc. of Canada -- **hehe Pinches and hugs Bruce** and they have testing at various levels that allow you to achieve professional standings, still be a professional editor, but you may not have the BA in English.
brucebarber - *ouch*
Louise Bohmer - Let's see, I am sure there is a USA site equivalent....I think they may even allow you to take the courses in both Can and US....
Louise Bohmer - **LOL at Bruce!**
AuthorVLJennings - hmm...It is something I have thought about doing...
jodilee - Several of the smaller houses will accept acquired experience, with a proven track record. Sometimes they send out editing tests before hiring someone on. Louise has encouraged me to go for EAC certification too.
brucebarber - I got an editing job on a book or two by dating my publisher's daughter, then hanging around for 20 years... there must be easier ways..
AuthorVLJennings – lol
jodilee - lol!
Louise Bohmer - Yup, Jodi is bang on there! hhahahahaaa Bruce, you brat! LOL ;-P
brucebarber - no, it's true...more or less...
Louise Bohmer - http://www.editors.ca/
brucebarber - *oops... is interrupting serious talk with frivolity*
Louise Bohmer - I believe it--Bruce has a look in his eye that tells me he's cheeky and clever
AuthorVLJennings - can you shadow or intern with an editor to get experience?
Louise Bohmer - Oh no! LOL No worries Bruce! Haha
EllaRegina - i know people who got copyediting jobs by taking some copyediting test. don't know if that is the same thing...
Louise Bohmer - I imagine you could, and there may even be some entrepreneur programs through SFWA, HWA, even try a google search for editing, V, and you may get some great results. :)
brucebarber - *had best behave with jodilee here... has story in Morpheus holding pen... must behave... must behave...*
AuthorVLJennings - cool I've got homework just kidding, but I will definitely look these up! thanks for the tips!
jodilee - Detention center Bruce... ;)
EllaRegina - but being an editor isn't just correcting manuscripts. most of the time the editor is the one who selects what is to be published, right?
Louise Bohmer - Yup. Ella Regina, that I have heard of too. :) some houses do that, also, just to test these potential editor's skills out, first, and its a great way to base editing on experience, which is such a huge and important asset, more so, in some ways, than a piece of paper degree, in my opinion, you know?
brucebarber - *is ALWAYS getting detention...;o{*
EllaRegina - i agree, louise.
Louise Bohmer - Wheeeeeee--Burce is subbing to CM?? I'm happy! :D TO Ella –
AuthorVLJennings - Question... What got you into working with Dark Fiction?
Louise Bohmer - Yup, with senior eds and EiC, we do assessments for Manuscripts too, and then other places have slush editors, and such, too, so it is more than just correcting the MS, definitely. :)
Louise Bohmer - Okay, on to V -- :)
Louise Bohmer - Dark fiction is a lifelong love for me. :)
Louise Bohmer - I'm a big one on folklore and mythos from ye olde days, and I love wrapping those together with horrific themes and dark fantastical atmosphere. Science fiction too, is another genre that intrigues and I like to dabble in. I guess, I just always loved reading dark fic and poetry-- Barker, Byron, King, etc -- it just comes naturally. :) LOL And I love odd, dark films too, they just squeeze my brain, and I like that. Haha
jodilee - Do you ever have trouble keeping the horrors of your writing out of your every day life? I mean, do people treat you differently once they've read your work?
AuthorVLJennings - cool! when did you start writing?
jodilee - Yeah, Louise definitely has a thing for Barker.. ;)
brucebarber - Clive does rule...
Louise Bohmer - To jodi -- :) Hmmmmmmmm.... for the most part, no, but some people do think ""Ohhhh, how do you write that stuff?"" But not to many bug me about it these days. When I was a kid though, I had a harder time of it. I was the spooky weird girl who listened to metal. haha! ;-) **Barker rocks my socks! When I was a teen, before we learned Clive was gay, my friend and I had a competition on who would....ahem....date him first...hahahh
MariAdkins - Nice euphemism!
brucebarber - date? *EUPHEMISM ALERT* ;o}
Louise Bohmer - LMAO! :D
jodilee - lol!
Louise Bohmer - I want that book I hear has a full nudie of Barker in the back! ;-D hahaha
Louise Bohmer - Okay, V's question –
Louise Bohmer - Whn did I start writing –
Louise Bohmer - I wrote when I was little, right on up into my late teens, until I quit for about 6 or 7 years, I think it was. Writing started young, when I would pluck on an old typewriter my mom used to help teach me to read and write, under her supervision, though, cause it was my gramps old typewriter. :)
jodilee - Louise, was it an old green underwood? lol ;)
Louise Bohmer - Hahahahahaahah I wish I could remember, and still had it! :) I think my mom lost it in her move, too, sadly. :( Loved that thing.
brucebarber - Well, this is more fun than a barrel of zombies, but I just got home from my day-job (evening, actually), and I think my dinner is burning... thank godz I'll soon be on EI for the winter and can do important things -- writing, chatting, reading, movies... REAL LIFE!!! Autumnal wishes to all!!! *smooches to the gals, firm manly handshakes to any boys present*
jodilee - ooo, kisses - does that count as bribery? ;)
brucebarber – hahahahahhahaha
jodilee - Night Bruce!
Louise Bohmer - Had a little gold lion emblem on it, and I loved the smell of the ink ribbon--ahhhhhhhhh..... thanks for stopping in, Bruce! :D And have a great autumn and Halloween, Mr. Barber! Take care of yourself!
AuthorVLJennings - Actualy my husband just came home too so I should go and see how his day was...
AuthorVLJennings - Does anyone have any last questions?
jodilee - ink ribbons... *nodnod* I can go with that. ;)
Louise Bohmer - :D
AuthorVLJennings - Thank you Louise for coming to chat! sorry for the tech. errors... I'll soon have them all ironed out!
EllaRegina - you could probably track down an old typewriter on ebay or craigslist. the ribbons will present more of a problem.
Louise Bohmer - No problem at all! :D Thank you for having me, V! :D And thank you, EllaRegina, for that tip too! Okay, all then I think we should wrap it up, eh? :)
AuthorVLJennings - If you (or anyone you know would like to appear as a guest speaker again (in the future) feel free to send me an e-mail! As always you can e-mail me for the Transcript or find it on the site in a few days!
EllaRegina - you're welcome. thanks for the chat.
